Ugh, this topic is going round in circles for too long now, so I think I'll leave it there. People seem to be missing my point entirely. I think we'll all have to agree to disagree.

I can't really see what point you are trying to make beyond the fact that you don't understand why they play a bit of hip hop or dance music at Subculture these days. I really don't see why this has become such an issue now. Ive been going to Subculture for about 2 years on an occassional basis and I believe Ive heard the Prodigy every time Ive been there. This isnt something thats just crept in recently. If you go back far enough punk rockers and headbangers didnt like one another.

This is a quick summary of the topic:
I believe subs has changed. The music has changed. The venue has changed. It is now less popular than it was several years ago. I added in some other stuff that annoyed me about my last few visits to subs (main room, drinks, overcharged for cloakroom). People unexpectedly misconstrue this as me blaming all of the staff that work 11+ hour shifts. People think I have no interest in musical diversity (I do). I try to make a simple point that subs has become less popular possibly due to the playlist every saturday night. I'm not saying this is definitely the case, just one man's opinion.
Like you said, you've only been going to subs for 2 years. So you are used to bands like Prodigy being played every weekend. That's fair enough. But if you were an older fan of subs like me (7 years, I celebrated my 18th there! and LOVED it), you'd know there have been some drastic changes to the music that's played there. Sure, it gets new fans in. But the old fans leave. Once a thriving Rock Club, is now a dwindling Alternative club. To me, this is just the slow down fall of subs and it upsets me.
I am interested to hear others opinions on this, which is why I keep coming back. But it does feel like I'm constantly repeating myself...

Tom,
You said that Dizze was played twice in your intitial post & used this as a platform for everything else, I merely pointed out that it wasn't the case and that you were either mistaken or took another band to be another Dizzee track.
Of course Subculture is less popular than 5 years ago, as I pointed out in my aforementioned interview, and has been pointed out by Wil, we are in the middle of the biggest recession/depression since the 1930's. (the West Midlands is the only are of the UK in an actual Depression - not a recession, check out the Sunday Mercury archives for full information).
We are still maintaining 60-70% (30% loss) attendance compared to 5 years ago which may surprise you. So let's compare it with other UK rock clubs: Cathouse Glasgow - now 60% down on attendance. Rock City Nottingham - now 40% down. Krazy House Liverpool - last I heard now 40% down. Bierkellar Brisrol - last I heard now 50% down.
Throw into this the smoking ban which fucked EVERY kind of club & city centre bar up (thank you Labour!) and (in my opinion) we're doing well to maintain the levels that we are.
You mentioned that you were going to go to Eddies as an alternative in your original facebook post, well the other Friday they had just 15 people in according to the bar staff so how you can use them as a 'shining light' is beyond me.
Good luck to Colin at Eddies, good luck to Shaun at Anarchy because we're all going to need it over the next two years to survive!
My Facebook offer still stands by the way!

Hi Dave, I never said that Dizzie was played twice! I just said Dizzee WAS played, and one of the DJs played a song twice in 15 minutes. That's all. I think this is getting out of hand now! Like I said I'm not absolutely certain the music is keeping people away from subs, I'm just trying to say that it *might* not be helping the club. It was just my silly opinion. As for Eddies, I haven't been there. I went to the old one about 6 years ago (before it was burnt down?), but not the new one. I've only been told it's a good night by some friends of friends, so I'll try it out some time soon. I apologise if I've offended anyone with my incessant whining, it was just that my girlfriends birthday was ruined and just HAD to rant somewhere. We were hoping to have a really good night, but were let down by subs sadly. I will more than likely go again in the future, I'll miss it too much if I don't! So I guess I'll have to put up with the (pants) music Dave thanks for the offer! But I may pass on it because I'd feel too guilty!

I think it goes without saying that Subs has changed over 7/8 years?! Everything changes. If a club night didn't change over that massive amount of time then they'd mostly definitely have gone under. Music is constantly evolving and is influenced by so many different genres. For any club night to play nothing but one genre of music would be a bit stupid and impossible I suppose? 50p extra for the cloakroom isn't exactly a massive increase and that is because of the financial climate and venue change possibly. Things will get more expensive as we are having to pour money back into our country. Hopefully a new government might bring some changes.
With anywhere, occasionally you are going to have a bad night, it is impossible for them to please everyone. If you are consistently having bad nights, then it's pretty simple, don't go there.
I don't believe it's the music putting people off subs I think it's the fact that no one has any money? Because it's the same at every other club. If you walk into most clubs a week before pay day it's pretty evident that's the problem.
I was at Subs Saturday and had a really good night. I've grown to like having the two rooms instead of the main room. I was also informed by a lovely bar man that it was £2.60 a double (Nice one on the upselling, of course it was going to work) I didn't actually know that before?

I agree with every statement supertom has posted.
The music sucks. It does. Half of it you/I cant dance too. You often get the good few indie/rock songs throw in, but its not consistant at all. You can say thats a personal opinion, but the proof is on the dance floor (or not in this case). Dont blame the recession for lack of turnout, if anything, subs is a cheap alternative to anything else on a saturday night. £5 entry with very cheap drinks? that would never be a reason not to attend. I used to love subs when it was at the old academy, it was no fuss, no shit and the music was consistantly decent and this was shown in many people who attended. The new venue is heavily staffed, crowded (just a shit layout) and i find i spend alot the night waiting for the thing to open!
Im still going to go, because after many drinks the music is less of an issue, and its always going to be a cheap night out. Just it seems more dicks who cant handle there alcohol attend week after week, the music is mostly rubbish and the atmosphere sucks.
Sort the music out and the rest will follow! need some more punk/rock/indie classics. They play this stuff, but like only 20% of the time.

hey tom with subs on that saturday night if you noticed there was more than ONE DJ on the stage so lets say jim played the one song while the other DJ was having a fag or toilet or anything else then he comes back and both DJ'S are texting people and talking to each other then DJ number 2 starts doing a little bit of DJing while jim had a fag they may not of known that they both played the same song, and as he is a dj not a hard job but i reseact all the dj's (love you jim) they are able to mess with there phone and text and what ever else and as the main DJ as subculture is also a Bar manager he has to keep messing with his phone to make sure the pub is ok i dont no why your moaning subs is veraity and with a mix of people get ovwer it and stop moaning on the website
